What does emergency preparedness mean to you?
There are many definitions, perceptions, and understandings of emergency preparedness, but the only one that is relevant is what it means to you, and your situation. Each community, organization, small business, and family will have a different reason to be prepared and therefore efforts for improvements will differ.
The hazards and risks will differ for every situation. The vulnerability, resources, and capacity will also vary. The value, importance, and desired outcomes will change. Likewise, each person and situation will place importance on different aspects of preparedness. There are as many descriptions of emergency preparedness as there are people and situations.
There is no wrong or perfect definition, but the most effective definition is the one that comes from you and relevant to your situation. Therefore, the only way to address and improve preparedness is to understand why you want to be prepared, why you need to be prepared, and what is your ultimate outcome.
Enjoy the journey.
